Privacy Policy

Scope

This policy applies to Bear Trail, an independent software workshop, and to the Bear Trail website and apps that link to this policy. These include products such as Murmur, Reef Keeper, Studio Ledger, Ritual Cafe, Discord Desktop Fixer, and Threshold.

Individual products can have additional notices in their store listing, onboarding, or settings. If those notices differ for a specific feature, the more specific notice applies to that feature.

Threshold Android

Threshold is an Android app by Bear Trail that helps you pause before opening apps you choose to guard. This policy explains how Threshold handles your information. Threshold does not require you to create an account.

Reflections and app activity stay on your device

Threshold stores the apps you choose to guard, their names and package identifiers, your settings, reflection text, related quotes, reflection scores and results, and dates and times in its private storage on your device. It also records when you open guarded apps and whether you complete the Shield or turn back. These records power the Shield, journal, calendar, streaks and insights.

Reflection checking takes place on your device. Threshold does not upload your reflections, your list of guarded apps or your guarded-app activity to us, RevenueCat or Google. Threshold does not read the content displayed inside other apps.

Android permissions

Usage access lets Threshold read app identifiers and foreground-event times so it can recognize a guarded app, including while Threshold is in the background. Display over other apps lets it show the Shield. The app picker reads launchable app names and identifiers from Android so you can choose which apps to guard.

The foreground service keeps guarding active and uses an ongoing notification. Boot access lets guarding resume after a restart when permission and system rules allow. You can stop guarding and revoke Usage access or Display over other apps in Android Settings at any time.

Purchases and subscriptions

Google Play handles payments. RevenueCat provides subscription validation, restoration, access to premium features and subscription analytics. The app connects to RevenueCat when it starts, including before you buy. RevenueCat assigns an anonymous app user ID and processes that ID, purchase history and tokens, subscription status, and technical information such as app and operating-system versions and locale. RevenueCat's purchase screen also reports paywall interactions, such as viewing or closing it, for subscription analytics. Anonymous here means that Threshold does not supply your name or email address; the ID can still link subscription records for an installation.

Billing information is sent over encrypted connections. RevenueCat processes it on our behalf, including on servers in the United States. Google handles payment details under its own privacy terms; Threshold does not receive your payment-card number. We do not send reflections or guarded-app activity as billing attributes, and the app does not include advertising SDKs.

On-device model diagnostics

When Threshold uses its bundled text model to check a reflection, Google's MediaPipe Tasks library sends performance and utilization metrics to Google. These include the app identifier and version, platform, model task and mode, session events, invocation counts, processing times and error codes. Google uses these metrics to operate, diagnose and improve MediaPipe under the Google Privacy Policy. The library processes reflection text on the device and does not send that input text to Google.

Google handles retention of these diagnostic records under its privacy policy. Clearing Threshold's local storage does not erase records already received by Google. You can contact us with privacy questions about this processing.

Retention and deletion

Threshold schedules daily removal of reflection and guarded-app activity records older than 365 days. Android may delay that maintenance, so deletion occurs when the scheduled job runs. App selections, settings and local billing status remain until you change them or clear the app's storage.

To delete local Threshold data, open Android Settings, select Apps, then Threshold, then Storage (or Storage & cache), and choose Clear storage. Uninstalling also removes the app's private local data. These actions reset your preferences and journal. Threshold disables Android's standard app backup; device manufacturers may apply their own device-transfer behavior.

Clearing storage or uninstalling does not delete RevenueCat or Google Play purchase records and does not cancel a subscription. Cancel subscriptions through Google Play. Billing records are retained to operate and restore purchases, resolve payment or support issues, and meet applicable retention obligations. Contact us to request access, correction or deletion of the billing data we control. Include the Billing support ID shown on the in-app Privacy policy screen, if available, before clearing storage. We may need to verify the request and retain records required for legal obligations or unresolved transactions. Google manages its purchase records under its own retention rules.

We may update this policy when the app's data practices change. The date above identifies this version. The policy is available inside Threshold and from its Google Play listing.

Data we handle

What an app handles depends on what you choose to do in it. In general, this can include:

• Content you create: notes, dictations, aquarium logs, coffee recipes, attendance records, payment records, or other information you enter into an app.
• Messages you send us: your name, email address, message, the page you submitted it from, and an optional answer about how you found us when you contact Bear Trail.
• Basic website information and optional article interactions: pages visited, approximate device or browser information, service-link clicks, successful inquiry counts, and fixed-choice article-feedback or reader-pulse responses collected through our website analytics.
• Information you choose to share: data you export, sync, submit, or connect to another service through a product feature.

We do not ask for sensitive personal information to use our apps. Please avoid entering information you do not need to keep in an app.

How we use data

We use information to provide the feature you asked for, respond to support requests, maintain and improve our products, understand how the website is used, and protect the security and reliability of our services.

Our apps are generally designed to keep the information you create on your device where the product can do so. Data can leave your device when you use a sync, export, sharing, integration, support, or other networked feature. The app or platform involved may provide more detail at that point.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use the content you create in our apps to build advertising profiles.

Sharing and service providers

We may share the minimum information needed with providers that help us operate the website or deliver a feature, such as hosting, analytics, email, app distribution, or crash-reporting services. Those providers may process information on our behalf and are expected to protect it.

Our website uses Google Analytics to understand general site traffic, service-link clicks, successful inquiry counts, and optional fixed-choice article interactions. Our inquiry analytics events do not include your name, email address, message, or referral answer. Analytics can use cookies or similar technologies to collect information about visits and devices. We do not ask readers to enter personal information in article feedback or reader pulses. App data is not sent to Google Analytics simply because you use a Bear Trail app.

We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect the rights or safety of Bear Trail or another person, or as part of a business transfer. We do not share app content for unrelated marketing by third parties.

Your choices

You can usually control the content you create through the app itself, your device settings, and the platform where you obtained the app. You can also choose whether to use networked features such as syncing, exporting, sharing, or sending support information.

If you have sent us personal information and want to ask about access, correction, or deletion, email [email protected]. We may need to verify the request, and some information may need to be kept when the law requires it.

To stop website analytics, you can use browser privacy controls or block cookies. Doing so may not affect the core site, but some website features may behave differently.

Security, retention, and children

We take reasonable measures to protect information we control, but no method of storage or transmission is completely secure. We keep information only for as long as needed for the purpose it was collected, to provide a service, resolve a request, comply with legal obligations, or protect our legitimate interests.

Our apps are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our products change. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised. If a change is important, we will make a reasonable effort to highlight it in the relevant product or website.
